Eastern Conference Player of the Week: Kemba Walker
The point guard for the Charlotte Hornets, Kemba Walker, has had a historically great first three games of the year. Walker is averaging 35.3 points, 5.3 assists, and 3 rebounds a game while leading his team to a 2-1 record, in the first week of the season. In the first game of the year, Walker led his team back from down twenty against the Bucks to up one. The Hornets would end up losing in the final seconds of the game. In that game, Walker had 41 points, 4 assists, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals, while hitting 7 threes. In his next outing, Walker had 26 points, 5 assists, and 5 made three-pointers in only twenty six minutes while leading his team to a thirty two point victory over the Magic. In the final game of the week, Walker scored 39 points, along with 7 assists, and 5 rebounds in a one point victory over the Heat. Walker hit seven threes which brings his total to nineteen made threes in the first three games of a season, which is an NBA record. Walker leading his team to a 2-1 record and putting on a tremendous display of scoring, is why he is the player of the week in the Eastern Conference.
Western Conference Player of the Week: Nikola Jokic
The young Nuggets center Nikola Jokic had an extremely versatile first week. In the first week of the NBA season, Jokic is averaging 26.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 7.3 assists, while leading his team to a 3-0 record. Jokic is known as one of the best all-around big men in the NBA. In the first game of the year versus the Clippers, Jokic led both teams in scoring with 21 points and lead his team to a nine point victory. Jokic also added 8 rebound and 5 assists. In the second game, Jokic showed why he is one of the best all-around big men in the NBA by scoring 35 points on a perfect 11-11 from the field, dishing out 11 assists with no turnovers, and grabbing 12 boards. Jokic’s first triple-double of the season came in route to a twenty-eight point victory over the Suns. Going up against the defending NBA champions, Golden State Warriors, in the final game of the week, Jokic scored 23 points, grabbed 11 boards, and had 6 assists in the two point victory over the Warriors. Jokic’s team success with him being the leader and his outstanding versatility, scoring, passing, and rebounding makes Nikola Jokic the player of the week in the Western Conference.
